Maine Gay Marriage Results

The Maine Gay Marriage Results are in. It seems that opponents of the gay marriage law have overturned same-sex marriage enacted by the state's legislature, as early results showed on Tuesday.

As Reuters reports, "opponents of same-sex marriage led with 52.7 percent of the vote against 47.2 percent." This close loss defeats the hope of many homosexual couples the right to wed in Maine.

The law was approved earlier in May, but never took effect, as opponents chased the opportunity to overturn it. The Maine Gay Marriage results are disappointing to many, and so far only certain states have the right to gay marriage. The laws in each of these states were passed by judges.

So far, only Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Iowa, and New Hampshire have this law.

The Maine Gay Marriage results were the most anticipated of 2009. Question 1 during the Maine election in 2009 centered on a “citizens veto” of legalized gay marriage.
